What to know about bathroom remodeling

Most of our bathroom work starts with a bathroom that has outlived its layout: a cramped tub-shower combo, a vanity too small for two people, or tile that has been patched one too many times. The goal is a room that is easier to use every morning and built to keep water where it belongs.

On a typical project we take the room down to the studs where needed, rebuild what is damaged, waterproof the wet areas, and then install tile, a vanity and the fixtures. Some jobs swap a tub for a walk-in shower with a glass door; others keep the tub and rebuild everything around it. Your photos in our gallery show both approaches.

Small bathrooms need disciplined planning because a niche that is two inches off or a door that swings the wrong way becomes a daily annoyance. We lay out the room on paper and with tape before anything is cut.

When a bathroom is ready for a remodel

  • Grout that stays dark or crumbles no matter how often you clean it.
  • A soft spot at the edge of the tub or the base of the toilet.
  • A shower that is hard to step into, or a tub nobody uses.
  • A vanity with no storage, or only one sink for a busy household.
  • Persistent damp smell, peeling paint or a bath fan that does not clear the steam.

How a bathroom remodel is built

  1. Plan the layout

We confirm where the tub or shower, vanity and toilet will go, and where the niche and glass door fit.

  2. Demo and rough-in

Old tile and fixtures come out, damaged framing is repaired and the new plumbing and electrical rough-in is set.

  3. Waterproof and tile

The wet area is waterproofed and tested before wall and floor tile is laid out and set.

  4. Fixtures and finish

Vanity, toilet, glass, lighting and accessories are installed, then grout, caulk and paint are finished.

What affects the cost of bathroom remodeling

Here is what typically moves a bathroom remodel up or down in cost:

Size of the wet area

A tub-shower swap is a smaller job than a full walk-in shower with a custom pan and glass.

Tile choice and pattern

Large-format marble-look porcelain, mosaic accent bands and cement-pattern floors each need different cutting and layout.

Fixtures and vanity

A stock vanity and standard fixtures cost less than a wall-hung unit or a freestanding tub with floor-mounted faucet.

Hidden conditions

Rot, old plumbing or an uneven floor are discovered once the old surfaces are removed and may change the scope.

Why choose E&MC Remodeling for bathroom remodeling

A bathroom remodel is a coordination problem as much as a construction one, since tile, plumbing, glass and lighting each have a lead time and each depends on the one before it. One crew handling all of it means the glass is measured after the tile, not before, and the plumbing valve ends up where the niche expects it.

Bathroom Remodeling FAQs

How long will my bathroom be out of service?

A full remodel usually means a couple of weeks or more without a working shower, depending on tile and glass lead times. If it is your only bathroom, tell us early and we will plan the sequence around it.

Can you turn my tub into a walk-in shower?

Yes. We check the floor, the drain and the framing first, then rebuild the base, waterproof it and tile it. Glass is ordered after the tile is set so it fits exactly.

Is a freestanding tub a good idea?

It is a beautiful feature, but it needs floor-standing or deck-mounted faucet plumbing and a floor strong enough for the weight of the tub and water. We check both before recommending one.

What does waterproofing involve?

The shower and tub surround are sealed behind the tile so that water that gets past grout cannot reach the wall or floor. It is the least visible and most important part of the job.

Can you match existing tile?

Sometimes. Discontinued tile is hard to match exactly, so we will tell you honestly whether a patch will blend or whether a full re-tile is the better answer.
