Showers, floors, backsplashes and fireplace walls laid out before the first tile goes up.
What to know about tile installation
Tile is where a remodel shows its craftsmanship. A straight line along a long wall, a mosaic band that lines up with the niche, a floor pattern that meets the wall evenly: these are the details that tell you whether someone planned the layout or just started in one corner.
E&MC Remodeling sets tile in showers, on bathroom floors, as kitchen backsplashes and on fireplace walls. Our own photos show black and white cement-pattern tile, marble-look shower walls with an inset mosaic band, herringbone behind a cooktop and floor-to-ceiling stone-look porcelain around a fireplace.
Each of these uses different methods: shower tile sits on a waterproofed substrate, large-format tile needs a very flat surface, and patterned tile needs a precise starting line.
Grout is part of the design, not just the gap between tiles. A tight joint on large-format porcelain looks sleek, while a wider joint suits handmade or irregular tile. Color matters too: a matching grout makes the surface read as one plane, while a contrasting grout draws the pattern forward. We show you samples before the grout goes in.

Signs your tile needs work
- Cracked tile or grout that crumbles when you touch it.
- Loose tile that sounds hollow when tapped.
- Water staining around a tub or shower.
- A dated pattern or color you want to change.
- A wall or floor that needs a feature finish.
How we set tile
Layout and substrate
We check the surface is flat, waterproofed where required and marked with layout lines.
Dry-fit
We test the pattern, plan cuts and decide where accent strips and niches land.
Set the tile
Tile is set with the right thinset and spacing and checked for level.
Grout and seal
After curing, grout is applied and caulk is added at corners and changes of plane. Sealing is done where the material needs it.

What affects the cost of tile installation
Tile pricing depends on layout and material. The main factors:
Tile size and pattern
Herringbone, mosaics and cement patterns take more cuts than simple grid layouts.
Surface preparation
Uneven floors and walls require leveling before tile can go on.
Waterproofing
Wet areas need a waterproofing system, which adds materials and labor.
Trim and accents
Mosaic bands, niches and edge trims increase the details.
Why choose E&MC Remodeling for tile installation
We plan the tile layout before the first piece goes on the wall. That means the pattern looks deliberate and the cuts land where you will not see them.
Where we do this work
We install tile in Vallejo and Marin County.
Tile Installation FAQs
What types of tile do you install?
Porcelain, ceramic, mosaic and stone-look tile for floors, walls, backsplashes and fireplace surrounds.
How long does tile take to install?
A small backsplash can be done in a day or two. A full shower or large floor takes longer because the tile and grout have to cure.
Can you tile over existing tile?
Sometimes, but it raises the surface height and is not appropriate in wet areas. We tell you whether it is a good idea for your project.
Do you waterproof showers?
Yes. The shower and tub areas are waterproofed behind the tile.
Can you do a fireplace wall in tile?
Yes. We have done floor-to-ceiling tile around fireplaces in both stone-look and marble-look porcelain.
